WELCOME
to St Michael-in-the-Hamlet
a Church for ALL the Community
Reaching out to our Community with the Love of God
We are a warm and welcoming parish church situated in South Liverpool close to the city centre. We describe ourselves as a family-friendly church, where everyone is welcome and included.
We meet for worship on Sunday (10am) and Wednesday (11am). We run a wide range of children’s and young people’s activities, including ‘Children’s Church’ (alongside Sunday morning worship) and various uniformed organisations. St Michael’s enjoys strong links to our local community and has recently become a venue for music and the arts.
St Michael-in-the-Hamlet Church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is one of the three churches in Liverpool built by John Cragg, who used many components in cast iron which were made at his Mersey Iron Foundry. St Michael’s is supported by an active Heritage group.
St Michael's 1815 Heritage Association
St Michael’s 1815 Heritage Association was set up in 2025 to care for, repair, restore, preserve, enhance, and improve St Michael-in-the-Hamlet Church in South Liverpool for the benefit of the public. This includes its structure, monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, stained glass, ornaments, and other items, as well as its churchyard and surrounding landscaping.
We put on regular events and fund-raising activities to this end.
Emergency Appeal
Imagine a place where history, music, and community all come together — a 200-year-old cast iron church that’s still alive with energy today.
St Michael-in-the-Hamlet Church isn’t just a building. It’s a stage for world-class artists, a home for new talent, and a space at the heart of its community. You may have visited us for a service, gig or social event…
But right now, it’s at risk.
We’re working with the National Heritage Lottery Fund to secure its future — building on previous Heritage Lottery Fund awards that have already enabled significant restoration work. Thanks to this earlier support, much of the building has been saved. However, if the final sections are not restored, the parts already repaired will not remain structurally secure. Without completing the work, everything achieved so far is at risk.
There is also a significant financial challenge. As a charity, we must pay 20% VAT on any grant awarded to us — a cost that cannot be reclaimed and must be covered through additional fundraising.
To put the scale of what’s at stake into perspective, rebuilding the church today to the same heritage specifications — like for like — would cost in the region of £10 million. This extraordinary building is irreplaceable.
Without vital repairs, this unique place could be lost. With your help, we can protect it — and keep its doors open for music, for heritage, and for future generations.
